Few musicians have more consistently led American music for the last 50 years than Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, the founders and continuing core members of Hot Tuna. As kids from Washington D.C., they took in the vast panorama of music available in the nation’s capital but developed a fierce love for the blues, jazz, bluegrass and folk tucked away in small clubs. In the mid-1960s, Jorma and Jack brought their unique sounds to a new band forming in San Francisco — and thus, the legendary Jefferson Airplane was born. As they created the soundtrack of the decade, the pair continued to play their acoustic blues as a duo, and their prolific side project turned into a second career as Hot Tuna. Now, decades later, these two boyhood pals still maintain one of the most enduring friendships in music.

National Geographic’s 2011 Explorer of the Year, Broad finds a surprising amount to laugh about as he shares stories of his triumphs, his tragedies, and his just plain weird experiences while watching science evolve to further our knowledge of the world.

This event is presented by the Seattle Symphony.
